Until 1990 no detailed study or recording of sightings of whales,
dolphins and porpoise in the Bailiwick of Guernsey (Guernsey,
Alderney, Herm and Sark) waters had been undertaken. Of the 76
known species of these sea-mammals, several occur around the
islands from time to time, but knowledge of type and numbers was
sparse. Mike Hill and Kathy Loaring, who were both members of La
Societe Guernesiaise therefore decide to found the Guernsey Whale
& Dolphin Group in 1990. The group was incorporated into La
Societe Guernesiaise (an NGO or non-governmental organisation) in
2001 and is called the Cetacean Section.
