Split into two sections, the first looks at the origins and evolution, zoogeography, and environmental effects of species diversity. Chapters also cover ecology, behaviour and conservation of this region's fragile ecosystem.The main part of the book comprises the species accounts. For each order, all known species are described, with details of distribution, range, ecology and behaviour. For each there is a line drawing, photographs of dentition and skull, and a range map. There are numerous black and white photographs, and eight colour plates depicting the squirrels and flying squirrels.
